The way Prayagraj celebrates festivals seems totally different from what I have known so far. As soon as the Kumbh Mela or Magh Mela begins, everything changes in this city. Pilgrims arrive in millions, tents are established, and so many people flood the roads and sidewalks.
Thus, thinking about accommodation was my concern even before the trip began. I went through this on my own, so I have some tricks and tips to share about places that are worth staying in during the festival.
Why location matters more in Prayagraj?
During regular months, there is hardly any problem in Prayagraj, and one can get to any place in around 20 minutes if they choose the right place to stay. However, during festivals everything gets totally upside down. Travelling for 10 minutes can take you two hours if your destination lies too far.
It was not easy for me on my first trip. I stayed in a distant area from Sangam and spent three hours reaching the destination. This time I planned all the details of the trip in advance.
Civil Lines – My top recommendation
Civil Lines became my base for the second trip, and I’d choose it again without hesitation. This area sits far enough from the immediate festival chaos to offer some peace, yet close enough that reaching the Sangam takes less time. Walking through Civil Lines in the evening felt like stepping into a different city entirely. The festival energy remained present, but at a manageable distance rather than overwhelming intensity.
Staying near Allahabad Junction
In terms of sheer convenience, the areas surrounding Allahabad Junction train station seem like a perfect solution. The train stations are crowded, especially during festival time, so having a place to stay nearby really saves a lot of time and trouble of travelling with heavy bags and sore feet after a long journey.
I have spent a night in this area during my travels, and I have to admit the practicality of the place outweighs any doubts about charm. One does not go there for the environment. The only important thing there is convenience.
Some hotels in Prayagraj near the Junction station work particularly well for festival-goers, providing early check-in for guests who arrive at the station before the official check-in time.

What I’d avoid in Prayagraj during peak season?
At first, areas that are close to Sangam and festival sites might seem like a good idea. Why not be as close to these places as possible? However, it quickly becomes apparent that being too close to these areas backfires. From continuous noise to being surrounded by huge crowds all the time, everything becomes an inconvenience. Even simple services such as access to water or proper plumbing fail since the infrastructure gets overloaded.
Therefore, being close doesn’t always promise ease and relaxation. I met plenty of travellers who made a reservation right at the festival edge and regretted their decision by day two.
Booking strategy that actually worked in Prayagraj
Festival season means booking months ahead, not weeks. I made this mistake initially, searching for hotels in Prayagraj just three weeks before Magh Mela and finding almost everything decent already reserved. Prices for remaining options had tripled compared to normal rates.
My successful second attempt involved booking nearly four months in advance. This gave me proper choice rather than settling for whatever remained. Prices stayed reasonable too, since early booking avoided the last-minute price surges that occupy festival accommodation.
Getting around Prayagraj during festival days
No matter where you stay, expect to walk more than you normally would. During major bathing days, many roads leading to the Sangam are closed to private vehicles, and traffic diversions are common. From Civil Lines, I often used shared autos or e-rickshaws until the designated drop-off points and then continued on foot with the crowds. It took some patience, but it was far less stressful than trying to drive all the way.
If you’re travelling with elderly family members or young children, factor these walking distances into your accommodation choice. A hotel with easy access to public transport can make your daily commute much smoother, even if it’s slightly farther from the festival grounds. Carrying only a small daypack also made navigating the crowds much easier than managing larger bags.
The balance I eventually found
Civil Lines, which is about 20 minutes away from the festival, supplied me with the right balance. It was close enough that it could give me access to the festival, but it also allowed me to escape into peace whenever the crowds became too heavy, which, as it turned out, was often.
The quiet streets in the evenings played an important role in allowing me to process all the things I had experienced during the day. Most importantly, the festival crowds are always highly stimulating, and some quiet place is a good way to balance that.

Final thoughts
Deciding on the accommodation during the Prayagraj festival period has more impact on the overall experience than any other choice. If you make a good decision about the place to stay, you will be able to combine your excitement with needed rest. Otherwise, you will be very tired and miss the spiritual aspect of the journey.
